FAA Wildlife Strike Dashboard

I built the below interactive Tableau data dashboard as part of the CS 416 Data Visualization course at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign during my Master of Computer Science in Data Science studies.

I chose to build a dashboard that explores the publicly-available FAA Wildlife Strike Database, which “contains records of reported wildlife strikes [by airplanes] since 1990. Strike reporting is voluntary.” I filtered the species list to only include birds and also excluded broad, non-species taxa like “Unknown bird – small” but leaving ones like “Hawks”. I also restricted the locations to those in US states.

It features “cross-filtering”, where selecting a subset of data shown on any of the three charts will cause the other charts to automatically update to reflect the narrowed scope.

Some questions to explore:

  • What regions in the US do osprey strikes tend to occur? Does it seem to correspond to any landscape features?
  • What species is struck most often in California?
  • In which month are the most short-eared owls struck in the US? Why might it differ from the general trend?
  • Which state has highest the number of bald eagle strikes?
  • What is the most common species struck in west-coast states? (drag a window to select multiple states)
  • Is there evidence of migratory patterns (month of year or flyways)?
  • When Hawaii or Alaska is selected, do different patterns emerge in the temporal or species distributions?
